Sunday School Best Practices for Leader Training

Revitalization and growth of Sunday School will seldom rise above the level of leadership training. Albert Einstein is generally credited with saying, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.” Raising the lid of leadership through training tends to produce better Sunday School practices. What are six training best practices:

BEST PRACTICES

  1. Make training relevant. Regularly observe and listen to leaders. Take a short survey. Address real needs and questions. Prepare them for what is ahead.
  2. Keep training focused. Instead of covering 10 things poorly, focus on one or two. Allow time to hear it, see it, and practice it. Share why it is important. Let them discuss it. Then assign homework.
  3. Vary delivery of training. Read a book and gather to discuss. Attend a training event. Watch a video and discuss it. Plan a progressive dinner training: go to the first house for appetizers and training; go to the second house for the main course and training; go to the third house for dessert and training.
  4. Train age groups separately as needed. Preschool Sunday School is much different than youth or adult. Enlist age group leaders to focus on a topic. Invite leaders from other churches or the state.
  5. Enlist everyone to help. Give everyone a specific job so your training participation will be great.
  6. Calendar training. Share training dates 6-12 months in advance and ask leaders to protect the dates.

WHAT IS YOUR NEXT STEP?
