Need a Sunday School Training and Improvement Team?

Prayerful intentionality, teamwork, and training are important for the improvement of your Sunday School. Focus here can raise your team’s level of leadership and execution. A training and improvement team can help your Sunday School move in that direction. How do you get started?

Enlist an Improvement Team

I suggest the team include 3-5 people. Pursue people who are passionate about Sunday School, especially those who are effective and creative in their Sunday School ministry. If possible, balance male and female, young and old. You may also want to consider enlisting leaders representing age groups: preschool/children, students, and adults.

Brainstorm with the Team

Gather those you enlisted to pray and brainstorm about the nature and scope of the work. Instead of writing a job description for the team, having them develop it may produce more ownership of the work and incentive to do it well. Gather their input into a simple mission statement with a set of actions.

Training and Improvement Team Focal Areas

Consider the following questions for conversation during brainstorming:

  • What are general and age group needs for improvement? How could training address those needs?
  • Which weaknesses need to be addressed?
  • What are ways training needs may be discovered?
  • You can deliver training in many creative ways. What ways do current leaders prefer?
  • How could you onboard new teachers and leaders? What should training include?
  • How can participation in training be encouraged and improved?
  • How can you identify and encourage potential teachers and leaders?
  • Who are potential trainers who could address identified topics for improvement?
  • What are potential resources useful to address topics for improvement?
  • How can you track participation in training? How can you track improvement?

Don’t limit your team to these questions, but these may help generate ideas and help your team sense the scope of the work.

Imagine the Improvement

Now imagine the energy and improvement that might be possible as a result of this team’s work. As creativity and attention are brought to bear on this important work, expectations will rise. So let them loose to begin their work. Improvement awaits! Make disciples. Make leaders. Be revolutionary!
